Star Wars Episode I: Racer for Game Boy ColorGame Boy Color, Genre: Simulation, Publisher: Nintendo, ESRB Rating: E - (Everyone), up to 2 players
Star Wars Episode I: Racer for Game Boy Color - The pocket-sized follow-up to the N64's best-selling Star Wars: Episode I: Racer proves just as deep and challenging as its 64-bit predecessor. Mastering the 15 tracks on five planets (Tatooine, Ando Prime, Baroonda, Mon Gazza and Malastare) requires near-perfect driving. Underlying the action is an ambitous story mode only hinted at in The Phantom Menace movie. You'll have to square off in one-on-one races against 15 different drivers. Your reward for a win is the losing Pod. Only after outrunning all 15 will you get the opportunity to speed against Sebulba. Controls are simple and responsive. As in the N64 Racer, the vehicles tend to drift around corners, more so if the surface is slippery. The engine noise can get repititive, but you'll want to keep the sound up to hear the audible cues about damage and boost status. You always have an overhead view of the action. Fortunately, thoughtfully placed arrows help racers negotiate the corners. You can also battle a Podracing friend via a Game Link cable.
